New Art Director Inspired by Illustration, ‘Spirit of Play’

Sean Alexander has joined JayRay as an art director, bringing experience as an illustrator, designer, furniture maker and gallery owner.

In more than 10 years as a freelance illustrator and designer, Alexander connected with nonprofit organizations and businesses, including JayRay.

“Before he even starts drawing, Sean asks questions to understand the goals of a project,” said Kathleen Deakins, JayRay president. “Then he’ll create beautiful artwork that’s also smart, effective design.”

Locally, Alexander’s illustration credits include the “South Sound User’s Guide,” a paperback about the known and lesser-known sites in the community. The Tacoma Art Museum gift shop sells his “Animals of the West” coloring book, inspired by the museum’s Haub Family Collection of Western American Art.

The Greater Tacoma Community Foundation selected Alexander as its Foundation of Art Award winner in 2016. The honor came with a cash award and a commissioned art piece for the foundation.

Alexander explains his approach as inspired by a “spirit of play, moving pieces around to create something that matters.”

He grew up in Gig Harbor and attended The Evergreen State College. Away from work, he spends time with his two young children, plays golf and creates art in his studio.
